Some sections of Tukuche Peak (6920 m) in Thasang Gaonpalika-2 of Mustang suddenly fell around noon on Sunday. The avalanche, which is estimated to have fallen from a height of 6,000 meters, has caused panic in the Himalayan district. Looking at the condition of the avalanche site, locals estimate that there is still a risk.
Locals said that when they looked at the landslide site from below, they saw a mound and a torn part of the landslide. According to Thasang-2 Chairman Nar Prasad Hirachan, the villagers who went to search for the missing persons in the avalanche on Sunday said that when they looked up, they saw a mound of cracks and falling conditions. He said that even when viewed from binoculars, there was a mound of landslides.
The villagers, who had gone to look for the thief, looked up and saw a pile of falling material. He said that the ground was cracked. We saw the same thing from binoculars, "said Hirachan. However, it is unknown at this time what he will do after leaving the post. "It simply came to our notice then. The villagers could not sleep well at night even though they did not have to leave the house, 'he said.
Jana Adarsh Amarsingh Mavic teacher Prakash Subedi also said that looking at the binoculars, the situation was dangerous. According to him, there is a lot of snow in the Siran area and there is a lot of cracking and falling conditions. He said that the mounds are likely to fall down soon due to the scorching sun for the past few days. "The landslide did not come from the peak, but from a steep place. However, the risk of landslides due to large landslides is the same, 'he said.
According to Prof. Khim Bahadur Gurung of Amarsingh Mavic, the locals have never seen such a big avalanche in the last six decades. ‘There are many challenges for such avalanches in the coming days in the Himalayan region. It needs to be studied, ”said Gurung. However, not only us but the world is saying that the risk of avalanches is increasing now. Schools were closed on Monday after students and teachers were injured in a landslide on Sunday.
According to him, there were four settlements near the landslide on Sunday. Larjung, Kobang, Naurikot and Boksikhola are the settlements there. Along with these settlements, there are schools, health posts, police stations, locals' settlements and arable land. "The landslide was divided in the middle and yes, otherwise the settlement would have been destroyed if it had fallen together," he said.
According to him, the temperature had risen in the Himalayan region during the first week of November. It was snowing in the upper region. He speculated that the snow may have accumulated at that time and now it may have melted with the sun and the landslide may have fallen along with it. "It's been 6-7 days, the sun is shining brightly during the day. Due to that, we believe that the snow melted and caused the landslide, 'he said.
According to Jeevan Thakali, chairman of the Conservation Area Management Committee under the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP), the landslide that fell from Siran area was split in two when it fell on another hill. Due to that, the damage in the lower region has been reduced. The nearest settlement of Naurikot is at an altitude of 2700 meters. Similarly, Kowang settlement falls at an altitude of 2660 meters. According to him, the landslide occurred in the middle of the hill and fell towards Larjung and Boksikhola.
"There is still a risk of landslides. There are piles of falling conditions. Some parts are also seen to be cracked, 'he said, adding that' there is a risk of further landslides at any time. ' "The villagers could not sleep at night as there was a risk of further landslides," he said.
Geologist Shrikamal Dwivedi said that the landslide from the steepest part is less likely to occur on Sunday. "It is expected that a landslide like the one on Sunday will not happen immediately, but it is not possible to be sure," says Dwivedi. It is estimated that the landslide will not be of the same size now as the rocks of the landslide site are weak, but it cannot be said that the landslide will not occur at all. It also depends on how much snow is frozen in the area. '
He said that such incidents are likely to recur in the coming days due to weak assessment of the impact of climate change. "We are very close to the big loss of tomorrow in the highlands. The effect is already being felt in the highlands, "says Dwivedi." So far no one was able to send in the perfect solution, which is not strange. He said that the risk of avalanches has increased in the upper part of the Himalayan district.
Lost 14 burglaries
Fourteen thieves have gone missing in an avalanche on Sunday. According to the farmers, locals Sakendra Gauchan and Bhim Thakali lost their lives at the rate of 7-7. Gauchan and Thakali had committed theft at the rate of 65. They were kept for grazing in the area below the landslide. According to Gauchan, it is estimated that most of the thefts were avoided as the landslide was some distance away.
"I lost seven burglars. Others have been found in good condition, "said Gauchan." Three of them were mothers. Others were safe, ”he said. The burglars were kept in a barn.
